Connect the Classroom 2026

27 February 2026

In February 2026, the UK government announced an additional £325 million of funding for connect the classroom, providing grants that help schools to upgrade their wifi networks, including switches and wireless access points.

This next round of funding is 50% larger and therefore should cover 6,000 more schools. Given the stricter standards and slightly reduced budgets applied in the later stages of the programme, this could feasibly include upgrades for 10,000 schools. Further details are yet to be announced and these estimates are based on a comparison of the first phase of funding from 2021-2025 which covered 4,000 schools, and the increase from £215 million to £325 million in this round of funding.

What else is covered

In terms of technology funding, the announcement includes details of targeted support for digital connectivity and helping all schools to access fast, reliable gigabit broadband.

When was this announced

The funding plans were set out as part of the Government’s 10-year plan to provide investment into schools, with a focus on inclusivity and accessibility. Details were included on the press release and the policy paper Education Estates Strategy: a decade of national renewal

When will we find out more

The announcement on the selection criteria is due to be announced this summer.
