The challenge

Combining pupil and staff devices, Burley And Woodhead Church of England Primary School have a high number of users accessing the network on a regular basis.

The SLT and IT Manager were looking for a high-performance wireless solution to make sure the speed and management of data transferred across the network was efficient and secure. In addition to these requirements, the school wanted to ensure they were able to meet the DfE Network Cabling, Wireless Network and Cyber Security Standards released in March 2022.

Being a supplier on one of the recommended Department for Education (DfE) frameworks, our infrastructure team were aware schools within Bradford Metropolitan Council could apply for Connect the Classroom funding. The Connect the Classroom programme provides funding to upgrade wireless systems, switches and associated cabling.

Primary Technology designed the new wireless network working with the school to submit the initial funding application to the DfE for approval. As a Cisco Select Partner, the proposed solution was developed to make the most of Cisco Meraki hardware and cloud-based management tools.

The solution

As part of the application process, Primary Technology conducted a technical survey and network audit that reviewed the existing data cabling, access points, switches and network cabinets.

Primary Technology provided project management alongside the supply, installation and configuration of enterprise-grade Meraki MS355 switches with a 10-year licence and support. The MS355 appliances are managed through an intuitive cloud-based interface, providing multi-gigabit (mGig) access switching for demanding enterprise and school environments.

The cloud-managed switches serve high-performance access points to WiFi6 standards, including Meraki MR44 access points for indoor coverage and MR86 outdoor access points, extending coverage beyond the school building. As part of the application, funding was also approved to connect the hardware with Cat6A cabling to maximise network performance.

The outcome

With the enterprise grade wireless solution in place, the staff and pupils at Burley And Woodhead receive the best user experience to help deliver their exciting curriculum.

The school now has the capacity to support their 1:1 device ratio and growing mobile device fleet, without any performance constraints. The Meraki solution that was implemented provides seamless access to a high speed, reliable wireless infrastructure with a peace of mind 10-year licence and support.

From the initial application, approval, design, supply and deployment, the project was completed within the agreed deadline. To minimise any disruption to teaching and learning, the installation took place out of school hours with expectations communicated to school leaders and staff regarding any on-site work taking place.
