Microsoft Windows Server 2016 end of life: What you need to know

26 November 2025

If you are running Microsoft Windows Server 2016, the crucial, end of extended support date is approaching – 12th January 2027. It’s vital that your organisation takes action before this date.

Windows Server 2016 support

The mainstream support for Windows Server 2016 ended in January 2022, and this marked the end of comprehensive updates from Microsoft, meaning that bug fixes, design changes, new features and support ceased, as the software was no longer actively developed.

The extended support continued, but only includes key security updates to protect from any new threats. This vital support is due to end in January 2027.

This applies to the Datacenter, Essentials and Standard editions.

What does this mean for your organisation

If you continue to operate Microsoft Windows Server 2016 after 12th January 2027, this poses a major security risk for your business. With no security updates available, the system is extremely vulnerable to cyber attack, as it potentially becomes an easy target for cyber criminals.

In addition, you may be breaking GDPR or PCI DSS regulations as rules state that systems should be operating supported software. This could leave you vulnerable to fines and loss of trust from customers and stake holders.

What should you do

If you’re not sure which Windows Server you are running, speak to your IT team or IT support provider as soon as possible. If you’re running Windows Server 2016, you need to make plans as soon as possible to migrate to a new server – allowing plenty of time before the deadline to ensure a smooth transition.

Extended Security Update (ESU) program

As a last resort, Microsoft offer extended security updates as a paid option to continue receiving security updates, for a limited period of time; a maximum of three years. However, this is not a long term solution and not one that we would recommend for servers.

What about other Windows Servers

If you’re running a newer version Windows Server, it’s still important to know the mainstream and extended support end dates so that you can plan ahead. Typically, the mainstream support lasts for the first 5 years of the life cycle, and extended support runs for the final 5 years of the 10 year cycle. The table below shows the key dates

Server VersionMainstream Support End DateExtended Support End Date

Windows Server 202213 October 202614 October 2031
