It’s been a good run – over 30 years! That’s how long the Microsoft Office brand has been used, but this is (mostly) due to come to an end as Microsoft announces its intentions to rebrand Office products under the Microsoft 365 brand name.
The brand unification has been announced after Microsoft evolved its Microsoft 365 productivity suite over the last two years. Microsoft officially renamed Office in 2017, whilst keeping its domain office.com. This is subject to change with the full rebrand to Microsoft 365.
All of the commonly known software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook will be available in the same manner as before, just branded under a single productivity suite named Microsoft 365.
What’s actually changing?
In the coming months Microsoft plans to transform the office.com domain, the office mobile app and the office app into one central platform called Microsoft 365. However, some instances of the Office brand will still remain (at least for now). Office 365 subscription plans are not due to change and Microsoft will still sell a bundle of applications named Office 2021 and Office LTSC.
When will this happen?
The changes to the domain Office.com will begin at the end of 2022. The major changes to the office application on both windows and on mobile will begin January 2023. Microsoft have ensured that there will be no impact to services during this period and that all applications will automatically update to the new brand.
