Backup of cloud services

The 3-2-1-1-0 backup rule

The 3-2-1-1-0 rule is a data backup strategy that recommends having three copies of your data, stored on two different types of media, with one copy kept off-site. It has 5 conditions that should be met:

  • Keep at least three copies of your data (including the original)
  • Use two different types of media for storage of your data
  • Ensure one of your backup copies is kept in an off-site location away from your original data and on-site backups
  • One copy should be offline, air-gapped or immutable
  • Your backups should be successful with no errors. This requires daily monitoring of backups, where any errors are resolved
