The challenge

Fast and reliable broadband is essential to teachers who want to be able to make the most of the available online resources and embrace new cloud technologies. Iveson Primary School were in a fortunate position to have a 100Mbps connection, although during peak times there was a noticeable strain on the bandwidth.

With the addition of mobile devices and the school’s willingness to adopt cloud technology, the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) at Iveson Primary were aware their current contract was due for renewal in the coming months.

The SLT instructed their IT Technical Support provider, Primary Technology, to research alternatives that would provide cost-effective connectivity and future-proof Iveson Primary School, helping to achieve their cloud technology goals.

The solution

In March 2020, Leeds City Council signed a £20.3m partnership with BT (Openreach) which would see the latter build a new local “full fibre” network to connect hundreds of schools, NHS and other public sector sites across the city.

Primary Technology had helped implement FTTP connections in the local area, and knew this new gigabit (1Gbps) deal was working to reach every school in the authority.

Once it was determined that Iveson Primary School could get FTTP and the BT (Openreach) rollout was complete, the school were presented with a number of renewal options to compare with their existing connection. The SLT swiftly made the decision to upgrade to the full 1Gbps offering, as this included no installation fees and will save the school approximately £2,000 per annum.

Installation was classed as a simple 1 stage install, meaning there was an existing Optical Network Terminal (ONT) in place with an available port. The SLT provided Primary Technology and our ISP partner with 3 preferable dates for the installation to take place and once a date was confirmed, the on-site hardware was shipped to site via courier next business day.

On the date of installation, Primary Technology sent an experienced engineer to site to ensure the service was live and DfE compliant content filtering was applied across the site.

Testimonial

  • So much of our teaching and admin is done online and we used to suffer from our old connection being saturated. We knew we needed a faster and more reliable connection to the internet and PrimaryT advised us on the best solution for our school. The changeover went smoothly with no issues and our download speed is now 10 times faster.

The outcome

Iveson Primary School is benefitting from connectivity and download speeds that are 10 times faster than their previous service. Having fast and reliable access to online tools and learning resources helps support digital literacy skills and improve lesson delivery throughout the school.

Unlike traditional broadband, FTTP is an end-to-end fibre service, without the constraints of the ageing copper network.

Not only has the service provided a huge upgrade to the school’s internet connectivity to improve teaching and learning, but the productivity benefits of ultrafast connectivity have been immediately clear.

The school hasn’t experienced any bandwidth issues using multiple devices or at peak times. The growing popularity of web-based rich content (such as video) and online assessment means that Iveson Primary has a cost-effective, future-proof solution.
