The challenge

Classrooms and learning spaces at Heaton St Barnabas’ CE Primary School were set out in a very standard style – a variety of interactive whiteboards and projector brands all connected to a teacher device.

With increasing hardware failures and requirements to calibrate the old interactive whiteboards and projectors impacting teaching and learning, school leaders wanted an interactive touchscreen solution to replace their ageing classroom technology. Teaching staff wanted to support active learning by engaging and immersing pupils in digital content rather than passively reading it.

Feedback also focused on inclusive learning opportunities for pupils and staff. Visual and auditory learners benefit from video presentations, early learners can easily trace shapes and letters, and advanced learners benefit from being able to collaborate with other pupils all using the same interactive display.

The solution

After carrying out an initial site survey, Primary Technology were able to recommend an interactive solution that would not only meet the requirements for ease of use and reliability, but also their budget.

When it came to mounting the interactive screens in the classrooms, the Audio Visual team advised on a hybrid approach that included a combination of fixed height mounts and height-adjustable wall lifts. The height-adjustable wall lifts ensure that KS1 pupils and staff are able to access the screens, with the fixed height mounts being installed in KS2.

The installation was completed to an extremely high standard, delivered on-time, as per the agreed installation schedule, meaning there was no disruption to normal classes. The old equipment was removed and disposed of in a secure and environmentally-friendly way, complying with WEEE regulations.

On-site training was delivered to all staff on the screen functionality, showing them the basics as well as tips and tricks for enhancing their interactive lessons.

Testimonial

  • The expertise offered by Primary Technology added significant value to our partnership with them on this project. Investing in interactive screens was a great way of future-proofing our pupils, this is the type of technology they will use later on in life, so introducing it at this age level helps prepare them for life after primary school. The team were competitive in price and willing to go the extra mile to help with training and installations to fit into our time.

The outcome

Interactive displays have helped students learn more, get motivated, and stay engaged. This is why so many schools already use them and their popularity keeps increasing.

Teachers at Heaton St Barnabas’ CE Primary School have also been using interactive games on the screens to further engage students in various subject areas, using them on a daily basis with their tablets so that the pupils are immersed in these subjects and share ideas.

Presentations can be shown on the screen, shared with the class for feedback and then the class can act on that feedback immediately.

The interactive touchscreens are also used as additional monitors for documents, videos, images and other interactive content staff are wanting to display to their class. These improved connectivity and presentation options, coupled with the lower ongoing costs, has provided the perfect solution for the staff and pupils.
