East Riding Horticulture  is a family run business based in the beautiful East Riding of Yorkshire Countryside. From humble beginnings over 30 years ago on their farm, the business has evolved and grown into a major horticultural supplier nationwide. Featuring multiple on-site warehouses holding an extensive range of stock, spread over 10,000 product lines.

With a team of experts possessing a combined knowledge of over 100 years, their emphasis is on friendly customer service, knowledgeable technical advice and providing specialist wholesale products to the industry, offering solutions for the growing world across the UK.

The challenge

Over the years East Riding Horticulture has outgrown their main office space and needed to increase their footprint. By quickly turning to a modular Portakabin solution, a new external office was ready for occupancy in a short period of time. Being reliant upon their internal network and wireless to complete most of their day-to-day business, the new modular building had no wired network in place and the existing solution simply wasn’t providing enough coverage.

In addition to the modular building were external warehouses, also heavily reliant on wireless coverage. Any network downtime or limited access greatly impacts productivity, completely grinding all internal processes to a halt, including picking, packing, inventory management and administration.

In order to ensure network uptime and coverage, East Riding Horticulture turned to their Managed IT Support provider, Primary Technology, to help design and extend the system. Any recommendations would need to accommodate complicated cable runs to external buildings and be a scalable solution that can be added to “on demand” to cover future growth.

The solution

Primary Technology conducted a site survey and a detailed scope of works was presented to East Riding Horticulture. The preferred technology of choice was Ubiquiti, which is built from the ground up for demanding use in commercial environments.

To ensure maximum connectivity and reliability for desktop users, the Primary Technology infrastructure team installed new cabling in the modular Portakabin, including a Ubiquiti Managed Network Switch and data cabinet. Additional Access Points were installed for improved coverage.

Unifi Point to Point (PtP) links were installed to help provide the external warehouse spaces with network connectivity without the need to run external cabling, reducing the overall cost of the project. The PtP links were configured and installed on the same day, minimising disruption and downtime.

A Unifi Dream Machine Pro was configured to provide a network security gateway and to help decrease the future management costs of running the system, allowing our support team to remotely manage and monitor the network.

The outcome

East Riding Horticulture now experience a highly reliable wireless network, with increased security, coverage and capacity stretching across a large property.

The newly installed Portakabin has both wired and wireless infrastructure in place to improve productivity and operational efficiencies. Coverage has been extended using affordable and effective Point to Point links into the warehouse spaces.

As a fully scalable solution, the existing network infrastructure can be extended as the company continues to grow. The team at Primary Technology can remotely monitor and maintain the network at East Riding Horticulture.
